Statewide Assessment Opt-Out Information

CAASPP Testing & Parent Opt-Out Information

Each spring, Trona Joint Unified School District administers the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) to students in grades 3 through 8, and once during high school. This statewide testing program includes:

  • Smarter Balanced Assessments in English Language Arts and Math

  • California Alternate Assessments (for students with significant cognitive disabilities)

  • California Science Test (CAST)

These assessments help measure student progress and provide valuable data to support instruction.

Parent Opt-Out Option for CAASPP

According to California Education Code Section 60615, parents/guardians may request in writing to opt their child out of some or all parts of the CAASPP assessments.

If you wish to exempt your child from this year’s state testing, please submit a signed letter to your school’s main office before the CAASPP testing window begins in early May.

ELPAC Testing – No Opt-Out Available

The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) is administered each year to students who are classified as English Learners.

State and federal laws require that all English Learner students be tested annually until they are reclassified as Fluent English Proficient. As such, there is no opt-out option for the ELPAC.

Trona Joint Unified School District will administer the ELPAC during the spring as part of its required assessment schedule for English Learners.
