A message from our Superintendent, Mr. Jerry Jennex:
August 7, 2024
Dear TJUSD Family,
Unbelievably school starts next week. Many of you may be wondering, “where did the summer go?” Well, from a temperature perspective, it is still very much present. However, teachers will be reporting to work this coming Monday (August 12 th ), all staff will be reporting on Wednesday (August 14 th ), and students will be here for their first day of school Thursday, August 15 th , 2024. Ready or not, another school year is upon us!
As we ramp up for another school year, I want to challenge each of us to consider a key portion of our district mission statement which implores us to “Educate and Empower all students”. The leadership team (school board, administration, teachers, and staff) are planning our work to focus on those two key verbs. In terms of the “educate” action verb, TJUSD has taken the following actions to enhance our
educational outputs at TJUSD: 1.) emphasized improving literacy skills though a significant staff development investment this summer in specific literacy based teaching skill training; 2.) hired highly qualified teachers to every extent possible including a highly trained international teacher for high school mathematics; 3.) increased the number of electives and Career and Technical Education offerings at THS; and 4.) Brought music back to TJUSD by offering beginning band to grades 4-8 via an online program (musiclearningband.com) and music instruction to all elementary grades.
Relative to the “empower” action verb, TJUSD is working toward empowering students by: 1.) hiring an additional counselor through the Community School Grant to provide relationship skill building support for our students in all grades; 2.) exploring how to bring nursing services to TJUSD students by hiring a part-time school nurse (also through the above mentioned grant); and 3.) emphasizing how to use our district’s small size to work toward a customized educational plan for each of our students. I would like to encourage all TJUSD constituents to approach the school year with a positive outlook. Working together we can achieve the goal stated in our mission statement, we can “Educate and Empower all”. Let’s make 2024-2025 a great school year!
Sincerely,
Jerry Jennex, Superintendent
